Mammoth Completes Its Phase

August 1988

Mammoth Geo Inc., Barrackville, W. Va., has completed its phase of the Offset Well Test Facility project for the BDM Corp. BDM is under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy's Morgantown Energy Technology Center.

Mammoth's work consisted of remote sensing natural fracture mapping of 38,000 acres in Whitley County, Ky. Landsat satellite imagery, National High Altitude Photography and Side Looking Airborne Radar imagery were used in the mapping. More than 1.2 million linear feet of potential natural fractures were mapped. Natural fracture density contour, rose diagrams and 6th degree trend surface maps were constructed to aid in the natural fracture analysis. Earth Resistivity Profiling Surveys (ERPS) were run over a distance of 2380 ft. The geophysical survey mapped and confirmed 12 natural fracture zones. Near-surface soil gas geochemical survey samples were taken every 50 ft along the ERPS geophysical survey. Six positive geochemical anomalies were identified in the geochemical survey data. Three of the geochemical anomalies were identified as related to natural fracture zones. Overall there was a positive correlation between the remote sensing, geophysical and geochemical data.

Mammoth also surveyed locations for 12 tiltmeter sites, constructed the sites, assisted with tiltmeter installation, derigged and reclaimed the sites. The tiltmeters were used to detect and measure minute movements in the earth caused by hydraulic fracturing in a nearby well.
